15+ years of relevant discipline experience and 5+ years in project leadership. Has a strong background in discipline work, and a competent understanding of regulations, codes, manufacturing standards, and industry standard practices. Skilled in estimating project costs and writing proposal content. Adept at budgeting and cost control.
General Purpose of Role
Provides discipline oversight and technical direction to a large group of employees for all facets of operations in one or more process disciplines under the administrative guidelines of the company. Accountable for leading team members including their ongoing development and their assignment on projects. Accountable for delivery of engineering within the discipline in compliance with company requirements.
Key Accountabilities
Business Development Support
Assists business development activities by facilitating the maintenance of personal profiles and resumes, tracking existing capabilities, and strategically addressing future customer capability requirements. Encourages positive working relationships with external parties such as the customer, suppliers, and contractors. May be involved in networking, negotiations, strategic alliancing, and cost savings efforts. Maintains pricing records reflecting the effort to complete discipline activities. May support proposals by developing the discipline execution strategy, estimating and reviewing costs, writing proposal content, and presenting to customers. May be called upon to lead part or all of a proposal.
Business Operations
Participates in budgeting and manages discipline operations to the budget. Controls discipline staffing levels, organizational structure, and monitors project discipline structures. Oversees engineering software licensing costs, employee usage, and skill development. Creates and maintains discipline guidelines. Ensures mentoring/training requirements are met. Manages the employee performance review process. Facilitates coverage of activities when people leave the team. Contributes to dispute resolution efforts. Ensures discipline technical work and team activities meet all health, safety, environmental, and security requirements.
Technical Competency
Owns discipline technical competency and quality programs and oversees technical competency of those within the discipline. Ensures team member adherence to company processes, generally accepted engineering and design practices, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications. Supports global standardization of equipment specifications, drawings, and document templates and oversees use by the team. Assures the understanding of technical knowledge, legal requirements, and customer specifications whenever viable and lawful. Uses local/global standards to support technical excellence. Appoints senior "known and trusted" team members to conduct checking and perform technical peer reviews and manages the execution of them.
Project Execution
Facilitates meeting project requirements through the use of discipline guidelines, programs, and management of the resources allocated to projects. May participate in project execution strategy and planning. Drives innovative solutions, technology advances, and methods to effectively deal with working out of sequence. May work with Project Management Teams to take corrective actions regarding any issues, staffing requirements, scope changes, progressing, or other events that could affect project completion and/or profitability. Reviews and authorizes work done by direct reports.
Global Level Summary
Responsible for an engineering administrative management function directing teams (typically 50 to 175 people) typically within a discipline but can cover combined disciplines.
Supervision Authority
A large group consisting of engineers, designers and specialists typically within the same discipline. Typical team size is between 50 and 175. As team size increases, additional people discipline management positions are necessary.
Communication
Effectively communicate and present complex proposals and reports to senior level management. Ability to persuade and influence others. Participative management style with a cooperative team approach.
Systems & Tools (Essential)
Competent in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint. Can organize information from many sources and retain as per the prescribed format and policies. Has functional awareness of discipline tools. Conversant in the interrelationship of tools within the discipline, analytics and modeling, and cross-discipline data centric methods.
Systems & Tools (Desirable)
Competent in Microsoft Access and Visio. Able to touch type.
HSE Capability
Assume hands-on management and implementation of all relevant company HSE requirements. Drive Safe and Sustainable engineering outcomes throughout the asset lifecycle via the application of SEAL. Role-model a commitment to personal well-being and a pro-active approach to continuously improving health, safety and environmental performance.
- BS in Chemical Engineering.
- 20+ years of Design experience in the Oil & Gas Industry.
- Trained in leadership and project execution. Will be actively licensed with a local engineering governing body where required by law.
Decision Making
Makes discipline management decisions under the general direction of the Location Manager of Engineering. Manages discipline resource mobilization and demobilization to maintain sufficient resourcing and ensure cost effectiveness. Accountable for the performance of the team, discipline risks, and driving continuous improvement. Responsible for discipline planning, budgeting, and approval of expenditures. Implements approved discipline programs in accordance with budget and company policy.
